The journey of Tom-Ferr began humbly, but bold decisions and strategic steps have gradually built its position as a leader in the processing and sale of steel tubes. As a company that has brought steel tube manufacturing back to Hungary, TOM-FERR demonstrates that innovation and the courage to overcome challenges can lead to remarkable results.
From a Small Business to a Market Leader
In the early 1990s, Oszkár Laczkó and his two partners started importing steel tubes from Czechoslovakia. By 1994, the legal predecessor of today’s TOM-FERR was established. A significant milestone came in 1998 when the company acquired a precision tube manufacturer in Csepel. This was followed by the merger of several companies, culminating in the formation of TOM-FERR Zrt. in 2000, setting the company on a path of rapid development.
Although tube production in Csepel ceased in 2002 due to unprofitability, the company transformed the facility into a modern warehouse and processing center. In 2004, TOM-FERR opened a new base in Tata, which became a key production and logistics hub.
Manufacturing Revival and Expansion
The financial crisis of 2008–2009 brought significant challenges for the company, but effective crisis management stabilized operations and prepared TOM-FERR for future opportunities. The real breakthrough came in 2018 when the company resumed steel tube production in Hungary. Today, TOM-FERR processes and sells more than 20,000 tons of steel products annually, with 30% of sales exported to the V4 countries, the Western Balkans, and other regions.
A crucial step in the company’s growth was the involvement of a strategic partner – Železiarne Podbrezová. This partnership provided TOM-FERR with a strong capital base, enabling it to finance its development without relying on bank loans.
Innovations for the Automotive Sector
The automotive industry is one of TOM-FERR’s primary markets. The company supplies steel tube-based components for seats, steering systems, and vehicle safety features. In this sector, TOM-FERR ranks among the leaders in Central Europe, serving renowned automakers from Japan, Germany, and Portugal.
Challenges and New Opportunities
The pandemic and geopolitical shifts in recent years have affected demand in key markets. However, the company responded with cost-saving measures and a focus on efficiency, ensuring its stability. By the end of 2024, TOM-FERR expects to restart its dynamic growth trajectory.
Looking Ahead
Today, TOM-FERR Zrt. stands as a symbol of courage, innovation, and adaptability to changing conditions. With more than 200 employees and a clear vision, the company is poised for further growth. Its history proves that strategic thinking, boldness, and high-quality production are the keys to success in the global market.
